Terms of use
Last updated: November 4, 2026
These terms are the agreement between you and Pangramist for using pangramist.com. Using the site means you accept them. They are written in plain language on purpose. If anything here surprises you, that is a drafting failure, so tell us at [email protected] and we will look at the wording again.
What the site is
Pangramist provides free word-game tools (solvers, word finders, a word checker, and word lists) and reference pages about words. The tools are provided for personal, non-commercial use: playing word games, solving puzzles, learning words, and settling arguments about whether a word counts.
The word list, and what a result means
The site checks words against the ENABLE word list, a public domain list of about 172,000 English words, with definitions drawn from Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913), also public domain, and short modern explanations written for this site.
ENABLE is not the official list for any tournament or any specific game. A word shown here may not be accepted by the game you are playing, and a word your game accepts may not be in our list. Two gaps worth naming: QI and ZA are valid in major tournament lists and are not in ENABLE. For rated or tournament play, the official list for your event is the only authority. Scores shown on the site are computed from the standard letter values for the game named, and your game's current edition governs if they differ.
Results are provided as they come from the list and the code, without a promise that any particular play is valid in any particular game, and without a promise that the site is free of errors. We fix errors we find and errors reported to us. The corrections page explains how to report one.
Fair use of the tools
Do not do any of these:
- Scrape the site, crawl it against the rules in our robots file, or copy the word pages or lists in bulk to build a competing dataset or site. One person's normal use, including printing a list for personal study, is fine. Bulk copying is not.
- Try to disrupt the site, probe it for vulnerabilities without permission, or work around technical limits.
- Use the tools or the site's content to claim an official status, endorsement, or tournament authority the site does not have.
- Use the site in a way that breaks the law where you are.
We may limit or block automated traffic that harms the site's availability for everyone else. There are no accounts, so there is nothing to suspend. A block is about the traffic, not about you personally.
Our content and your use of it
The design, text, guides, glosses, code, and arrangement of this site belong to Pangramist or its licensors, apart from the public domain material they are built on (the ENABLE list itself and the 1913 dictionary text, which belong to everyone). You may link to any page. You may quote a short passage with a link back. You may not republish pages, lists, or datasets from the site wholesale, in print or online, as your own.
Word reports and corrections you send us: by sending one, you allow us to use it (checking the word, adding or fixing an entry, and describing the fix) without payment or credit, although we may credit a report on the corrections page unless you ask us not to. Do not send us material copied from a copyrighted word list or dictionary. A bulk list sent to us will not be used.
No affiliation
Pangramist is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Hasbro, Mattel, Zynga, the New York Times Company, NASPA, or HarperCollins. The full disclaimer is in section 3 of the site's fine print and in the footer of every page. Game names used on the site name the games the tools work with. That is all they do.
Advertising
The site carries display advertising from third-party partners. We do not control the specific ads served and an ad's presence is not our endorsement of the product or service advertised. Problems with an ad (a misleading claim, a broken link) go to [email protected] and we will raise them with the partner.
Liability, kept proportionate
The site is free, and these terms reflect that. To the fullest extent the law allows, Pangramist is not liable for losses arising from reliance on a word result, a score, or a definition (a lost game is the expected worst case, and we have all been there), or from the site being unavailable. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, and nothing here removes a consumer right you have where you live. If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still stands.
Changes and governing matters
We may update these terms, with the date at the top changing when we do. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the changed terms. These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state whose law applies to the operator, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, but that choice does not take away mandatory consumer protections in your own jurisdiction.
