Pangramist

Pick an opening word that covers more ground

A first guess in a five-letter daily game can't be right often. It can be useful almost every time. This finder ranks openers by letter coverage: five different letters, common letters first, no letter wasted on a repeat unless the coverage earns it. Pick one, see why it ranks where it does, then start the solver with it as your first guess.

Staging note, not page copy: PAGE-PLAN.md calls this tool the best opening word finder. The heading above drops "best" on purpose, under the no-claims rule in LEGAL-CHECKS.md section 6. The ranking is shown and explained instead of crowned.

The list behind this tool

Words come from ENABLE, a public domain list, not the official NASPA (NWL) or Collins (CSW) tournament list: some tournament words, QI and ZA for example, aren't in ENABLE, and some ENABLE words aren't tournament legal, so for rated play, check the official list for your event.

Pangramist isn't affiliated with or endorsed by the New York Times Company. This tool ranks opening guesses for five-letter daily games in general, and any game name used on this page does so descriptively only.

Your letters stay in your browser. Nothing you type here is sent to us or stored.

Picked one? Take it straight into the five-letter solver and play the board from there.
